This is the shocking moment revellers fall down escalators in CCTV footage shared by Network Rail to warn partygoers to take it easy tonight.

Today marks the most popular night of the festive season for Christmas celebrations - dubbed Black Eye Friday because of the large amount of alcohol Britons are expected to consume.

One clip shows a man drop everything as he rolls off the end of an escalator heading up in a station.

Another featured a man, who appeared either asleep or calmly resigned to his fate,  laying with his feet above his head as the escalator went up.

A second painful-looking clip shows a man trying to leap down an escalator while it heads in the opposite direction.

He continues to struggle as he remains in the same place, like a scene from a slapstick comedy.

Suddenly he tumbles over on the moving stairs and keeps rolling as the stairs move beneath him.

Another clip has a man holding onto escalator rails as it reaches the top but does not let go - forcing the people behind to crash into him.

The video footage was filmed in London Bridge Station over a period of time.

Network Rail released a guide for partygoers to avoid accidents on stairs and escalators.

It advised passengers out celebrating to use lifts or step-free routes where available if carrying luggage and warned travellers not to rush when moving up or down the stairs or escalators because it could lead to a fall.

'Hold the handrails and concentrate on your footing, walk don’t run,' the train company added.

The video was captioned: 'This Friday is the most popular night of the festive season for Christmas celebrations.

'However, as this shocking CCTV footage shows, it’s important to take care on and around the railway after drinking alcohol.'
